Environmental Issues
There is no known major environmental issues present in the Mariana Trench. However, there are still a few things that can negatively effect the environment there. An example of one of the possible problems is trash dumping. This is where people, such as sailors on large boats, may dump their trash into the ocean. The effects are still unknown on how the trash effects the organisms. But you can easily image how a creature could die from being stuck/caught in trash. There is also some evidence showing that the collection of trash in the ocean can cause many chemical pollutants to gather up in the water. In an attempt to prevent litter dumping, a law was made banning it. But a lot of people still participate in this illegal activity. Fortunately, this doesn’t significantly effect the Mariana Trench because there are thousands of feet needed for the trash to fall before it reaches the floor.
Not much is known about the environmental issues in the Mariana Trench due to lack of information. It is said that scientists have only sampled a couple football fields worth of ocean floor. Most environmental problems found in water biomes do not apply to the Mariana Trench.
In order to protect the Mariana Trench, the trench and the islands surrounding it are under the protection of the Marina National Monument. The goal of this group if to keep the ecosystem healthy and protect it from any possible harm.
